2015 was a shocking year. Todd Haynes, who directed the horrendously schlocky Far from Heaven in 2002, released a mature film about love’s many deceptions called Carol. Far from Heaven and Carol look similar on paper, but while the former explains its characters’ motives plainly, Carol takes a more realistic route by letting Carol (Cate Blanchett) and Therese (Rooney Mara) guide the narrative instead of letting it guide them, allowing for a more thorough examination of what roles romantic partners play in the lives of their companions at various stages in their companion's life. Carol is much more romantically experienced than Therese which affects the way they interact with each other, Carol taking more of a predatory position in the relationship. But maybe this all seems too serious for a holiday movie! Rest assured, there are certainly superficial aspects to enjoy. Anyone can appreciate the snow-filled 1950s New York setting and the Philip Glass-inspired beautiful score.
