DCP (new 4K restoration) at IFC Center
If you shoot on Kodak 35 or 16 and have half-decent art direction and lighting (or just shoot outside during the right time of day), you’re guaranteed a great-looking film. That’s why all these somewhat forgotten movies from the ‘90s seem like glorious hidden gems when they get their inevitable restorations. Can’t say the same for anything digital. It takes a lotta work to pull a great image out of an Alexa.
Reminds me of Leigh’s Life is Sweet. With its characters which land right outside of caricature and a pervasive familial warmth that butts heads with the cynical realities of the outside world, although it never hits the highs of that film. Had it at a three for a bit, but this really won me over (save for that really, really bad ADR). Low four. And I know I’m not supposed to agree with Carl (the pseudo-intellectual), but I kinda do; I’m sorry, I’m young.
