That blue bleach bypass grade is terrible. I bet you the log digital negatives looked better than the finished product.
The sequence following the main character getting shot—quite impressive. Only time I think the film actually captured the psychosis of war. The French woman hiding in the darkness, silhouettes played against each other in the foreground and background. Crazy what digital can do with almost complete darkness. The rest of the film comprises probably my least favorite work by Deakins ever, though. Of course he’ll win the Oscar for it.
Notice I’m acting like Deakins directed the thing. Mendes feels like a complete non-entity here.
