Wow some people are so easily bored. I know this has got over a four-star average on Letterboxd, but half of the top reviews are vaguely negative and talk about how it dragged. Seriously, that’s such an uninteresting criticism for something like this. Same with OJ: Made in America, same with every single other miniseries. I was totally in it for eight hours. Although I did have the benefit that I basically knew none of the content, it evens out since I don’t benefit from having a nostalgic personal connection with it like many others have mentioned.
It doesn’t dive into the psyche of a mega-star who is lauded as the “best basketball player who ever lived” at every turn quite as much as I wanted it to, maybe it intended for it to be all observational, and there’s not much effort put into connecting anything with contemporary, non-basketball events. I guess I want another OJ, but that’s not going to happen. This is much more like Hoop Dreams but on a bigger stage. Gets you invested in the players and then spaces out the game footage just perfectly to elicit a certain reaction that would only otherwise occur if you had been following along in the ‘90s and seen every game live.
Probably going to see this again with my grandfather. If it’s just as entertaining the second time, I’ll move it up to a five.
