Utterly ridiculous. A rollicking good time.
I think Aronofsky was sold to me in the wrong way. I didn’t get it with Black Swan, but Requiem for a Dream made it clear—this guy makes comedies. The best kind of comedies, the ones that take themselves seriously.
Requiem depicts drugs as this primordial evil with no nuance. We barely ever see the pleasure associated with the act of taking. There is zero reason given for any of these characters to take these drugs. Rather than a refuge for those left behind by depleted social programs and an unfortunate opportunity for economic mobility for others, Aronofsky’s heroin is a demonic entity that comes in through your windows and snatches your kids when they’re sleeping.
A much better comedy horror than House.
