Honestly not enough dancing. But those close-ups! The quality of Kodak’s color stock really took a dive in the early ‘90s—Dirty Dancing seems to have slid in right before, right when, in my opinion, film chemistry was at its absolute peak (although we almost got there again in the late 2000s before the digital revolution, and now we’re nearing it once more). They really milked the beauty of those Panny lenses with such a saturated, milky stock; nearly every shot has shallow focus, even in bright daylight. Very intimate. Fantastic work from DP Jeff Jur on what seems to be his first major film (besides Soul Man, ouch). He went on to shoot a couple episodes of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel which I quickly connected to this film stylistically and obviously content-wise. The intimate cinematography does most of the work here to build the central relationship along with the chemistry between the actors. And what a film transfer! I think this is the first time I’ve watched a UHD release on Amazon Video, and I’m quite impressed. Grain structure is almost completely maintained. Didn’t notice any macroblocking.
That moment when your bro whips out The Fountainhead 😳
